A spotted towhee (formerly called the rufous-sided towhee) dines on an apple in an old orchard at the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge near Olympia, Washington. The apples are intentionally left for the birds (and mammals -- coyotes love them) by the refuge managers. Photo © copyright by Stephen Penland.
