A caterpillar pulling discs sits idle and in silhouette at the crest of a hill as the sun moves toward the horizon. This photograph was taken with film. An advantage of film over digital is seen in relatively smooth gradations of colors around the sun. Digital often produces "doughnuts" of colors with relatively sharp boundaries around the sun and is much less appealing to my eye. When I gave up film, I knew I would also be giving up photographs like this. Photo © copyright by Stephen Penland.
