I set off in the early morning darkness with a flashlight a bear spray, knowing full well that this was grizzly bear country and I was the first hiker of the day. I reached Grinnell Lake shortly after sunrise. I was impressed with the height and steepness of the mountains surrounding the lake and especially the multiple colors and waterfall on the flank of the mountain. I had the place to myself for the entire morning; even the bears stayed away. Photo © copyright by Stephen Penland.
