Fallen Snag

Carbon River, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

Old-growth forests are characterized, in part, by dead trees that remain standing as snags or that fall to the ground as logs in various states of decay.  Snags and logs provide important habitat for a variety of animals, large and small.  This cedar, with its reddish wood, caught my eye.
