At first glance, badlands and deserts may appear desolate and inhospitable. Yet these stark landscapes have a simplicity that is beautiful in itself. The contrast with oceans and forested mountains is striking, yet they have much in common: important habitat for certain plants and animals, places of quiet as well as dramatic events, and places that add to the human spirit.
