Heron Hunting

Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park, Washington

The reds and yellows of autumn reflect on the pond that this great blue heron is using to search for fish, frogs, salamanders, or insects to eat.  Because this pond is close to the Hoh Rainforest visitors' center, the normally wary heron is used to people and allowed me to photograph it from the side of my vehicle parked at the edge of the pond.  Photo © copyright by Stephen Penland.
